Kim Kardashian is BLASTED for buying Janet Jackson’s iconic ‘If’ outfit for $25k in auction – two years after Marilyn Monroe dress controversy

Kim Kardashian sparked fresh backlash for purchasing the iconic, two-piece outfit that Janet Jackson wore in her 1993 music video for her song If.

While she bought the ensemble for $25,000 back in 2021, the 43-year-old reality star waited three years to wear the custom-made black crop top and black suede pants, with lace up in the front and fringe on the sides, out publicly.

Upon revealing that she was attending Jackson’s concert in the archival look, social media users flocked to X (previously known as Twitter) to condemn her choice.

Many fans of Jackson were enraged that the American Horror Story actress was wearing the look, which some argued ‘should be in a museum.’

‘Buying historical pieces just for the kick of it, UGH!’ one complained while others tweeted that the mother-of-four was acting ‘cringe.’

Another asked: ‘Why the hell does she have a lot of the Jackson’s clothes? Why them??’

‘Cause they’re fans and they can afford them!’ a loyal Kardashian fan replied, to which someone asked if the SKIMS founder was going to damage the garments like she ‘ruined Marilyn Monroe’s dress’ at the 2021 Met Gala.

Despite speculation that Kardashian damaged the back of the crystal-covered dress, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!, the owner of the gown, said in a statement that the reality star ‘did not, in any way, damage the garment in the short amount of time it was worn at the Met Gala.’

Some fans of the TV personality argued that people can’t be ‘so mad at her buying’ the look, which was part of a three-day auction on Jackson’s 55th birthday in 2021.

At the time, the All for You hitmaker sweetly told Kardashian that she hopes the outfit gave her ‘as much pleasure as it did’ her over Instagram.

Kim arrived to Jackson’s concert at the Palm Desert Arena in a party bus on Tuesday with her sister Khloe Kardashian and their mother, Kris Jenner.

Ahead of the show, Kim teased footage of herself wearing the one-of-one two-piece ensemble as she showed off her toned midriff in one snap.

First, she recorded her footsteps as she walked in pointy-toe black heels and cooed, ‘Can you guys guess where I’m going tonight? I bet you will never guess.’

In a second clip shared to her Stories, she dropped a huge hint as she soundtracked it to Janet’s upbeat R&B hit.

Next, Kim filmed herself in the backseat of a luxury vehicle as she made her way to the Acrisure Arena at Greater Palm Springs.

She showed a bit of her bleach blonde locks and revealed her fully made up face.

The snippet was posted along with another one of Jackson’s smash singles, Any Time, Any Place.

Finally, Kim confessed: ‘I’m spamming tonight so unless u wanna see so much @janetjackson content I suggest u stay off my page.’

In the following Story post, Kim re-shared a note the pop legend shared with her shortly after she scored the outfit.

Back in May 2021 Kim uploaded a photo of Janet in the If video and gushed, ‘For @janetjackson’s bday bc I’m such a fan I can’t believe I won this outfit on @jules_auctions.’

Jules Auctions also shared the news of Kim’s purchase on X at the time.

There was an accompanying note that read: ‘SOLD for $25,000!

Others said if they were ‘so mad’ then they ‘should’ve bought’ the outfit themselves

And the sleek, cropped vest boasts buttons going up the front, along with thin, white shells sewn onto either side.

Kim found the perfect complementary choker with coordinating shells to wear to the show.

Kim is known for her showstopping fashion and she loves to reference historic sartorial moments.

She shocked fans and ruffled feathers in 2022 when she wore the custom-made champagne-colored gown Marilyn Monroe famously wore in 1962 — when she serenaded then-president John F. Kennedy — to the Met Gala.

Kardashian has also looked to stars like Cher, Aaliyah, and Sophia Loren for fashion pointers in the past.
