Michael Jordan’s flu game Air Jordan 12 shoes that he wore in Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals recently sold for a whopping $1.38 million. The pair was first sold in 2013 for almost $105,000. Business analyst Darren Rovell breaks down why the iconic shoes’ price spiked by more than $1 million in 10 years.

One-of-one

“I always say when there are real one-off pieces when it’s one-of-one, that’s really where you’re in good shape,” Rovell told Dan Patrick. “These flu game shoes sold again for the second time. They first sold in 2013 straight from the ball boy — Preston Truman — for $105,000. And they just sold for $1.38 million. I think the reason for that is overtime is not just inflation but… you just look, it’s one-of-one. It’s Jordan’s most iconic game and to own a piece of that that’s authenticated, that’s real.”

MJ wore the Jordan 12s in the flu game — one of his most memorable performances of all time. In the Chicago Bulls’ win, His Airness dropped 38 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out five assists during 44 minutes on the court, all while feeling under the weather.

Jordan gave his game shoes to Utah Jazz ball boy Preston Truman who decided to sell them in 2013. The bidding began in November and started at $5,000. A month later, it sold for $104,765.

Before Game 5, Truman went to the Bulls’ locker room and saw Jordan with an IV. The doctors had just left and diagnosed the GOAT with the flu. According to a report by The Salt Lake Tribune, Truman asked if Jordan was going to do anything with the shoes after the game. Jordan responded: “Why, you want them?” Truman responded: “I would be honored,” he said.

After the game, the Bulls’ equipment manager picked up the shoes and was about to store them away. Jordan stopped him and said, “Those are his,” pointing to Truman. Jordan signed the shoes later as well.
