Rachel Roy breaks her silence to DENY being Jay Z’s ‘mistress’ from new Beyoncé song about infidelity
Roy fueled the rumors herself after she seemed to identify herself as the other woman Beyoncé sings about on her new album Lemonade, which is believed to contain references to her rapper husband’s alleged infidelity.
The track called ‘Sorry’ includes a reference to a mistress she calls ‘Becky with the good hair’.
Beyoncé fans deduced that ‘Becky’ was Roy when she posted an picture to Instagram just hours after the album’s release, writing: ‘Good hair don’t care, but we will take good lighting, for selfies, or self truths, always. Live in the light #nodramaqueens.’
But in a statement to People on Tuesday, Roy says that her comments were misinterpreted.
Not me: Fashion designer Rachel Roy (pictured outside her home in Los Angeles on Monday) has issued a statement, denying claims that she is the other woman Beyoncé sings about on her new record Lemonade
‘I want to put the speculation and rumors to rest. My Instagram post was meant to be fun and lighthearted, it was misunderstood as something other than that,’ the 42-year-old designer said. ‘There is no validity to the idea that the song references me personally. There is no truth to the rumors.’
Roy went on to say that both she and her daughters have been the subject of online abuse in the wake of the Instagram post.
‘Consequently, online haters have targeted me and my daughters in a hurtful and scary manner, including physical threats. As a mother – and I know many mothers would agree – I feel that bullying in any form is harmful and unacceptable.
I want to put the speculation and rumors to rest. My Instagram post was meant to be fun and lighthearted, it was misunderstood as something other than that. There is no validity to the idea that the song references me personally. There is no truth to the rumors.
‘I would hope that the media sees the real issue here – the issue of cyber bullying – and how it should not be tolerated by anyone,’ she said.
Roy also appeared to adress the Jay Z affair rumors early Sunday morning, when she tweeted: ‘I respect love, marriages, families and strength. What shouldn’t be tolerated by anyone, no matter what, is bullying, of any kind.’
Roy stepped out for the first time since the scandal on Monday, wearing sunglasses and keeping her head down as she walked into her $2million home in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles.
Fueling rumors: Rachel posted an Instagram which appeared to reference the ‘Becky with the good hair’ mistress on Beyoncé’s Sorry. The since-deleted post reads: ‘Good hair don’t care, but we will take good lighting, for selfies, or self truths, always. live in the light #nodramaqueens’
Her side: The designer did her best to try to calm angry Beyonce fans, defending herself on Twitter early Sunday morning
Cheater? Beyoncé’s new album includes many songs about infidelity, leading many to believe that it is has autobiographical references to her own marriage with rapper Jay Z (the couple pictured above at the 2015 Met Gala)
She refused to answer Daily Mail Onli
ne’s questions about whether she was ‘Becky’ at the time.
Roy also canceled an appearance at the last minute on Monday due to a ‘personal emergency’.
The star’s fans – known as the BeyHive – launched a series of scathing online attacks on the designer, trolling her social media and branding her a ‘home wrecker’.
They flooded her Instagram with lemon and bee emojis – in a reference to Beyonce and the title of her new album – and also littered her 16-year-old daughter’s Instagram page with negative comments.
Fans even hacked the designer’s Wikipedia page to include references to Jay Z and Lemonade.
In response, Roy momentarily turned her Instagram to private but by Monday morning this was switched back on to public.
The saga comes on the back of previous rumors that Jay Z, 46, had cheated on his superstar wife and mother of his four-year-old daughter Blue Ivy with Roy.
His infidelity was believed to have been behind the infamous elevator fight between Jay Z and Beyonce’s sister Solange in 2014 following the Met Gala.
Roy was at the celebrity packed, invite-only Met Gala after party, held at New York’s Standard Hotel, when he and Solange began to argue.
Solange looked she would ‘explode’ when she approached Roy at the exclusive event, sources claimed at the time.
Later security footage of Solange leaving the event with her sister and Jay Z showed her arguing with the hip hop star as they got into one of the hotel’s elevators.
In the video Solange is seen yelling at her brother-in-law before lunging across the elevator kicking and punching him.
Beyoncé appears to say nothing but does not attempt to stop her sister from attacking her husband.
Reports of Jay Z’s alleged affair surfaced soon after the video was released.
Roy never commented on the allegations or the elevator incident, but did post a link to her summer collection on Twitter two days after the release of the video, writing; ‘The Beach is better!’ which is also the title of a 2007 song by Jay Z.
Roy, who is an Indian American fashion designer based between New York and Los Angeles, embarked on her fashion career as an intern at Roc-a-Wear, which was owned by Jay Z and Damon Dash, 44.
She rose through the ranks and eventually became creative director for the brand and started dating Dash.
The couple married in 2005 and had two daughters – Ava in 1999 and Tallulah in 2008.
They divorced in 2009, and are currently embroiled in a contentious court battle after Roy was awarded sole custody of their children and granted a three-year restraining orders against Dash.
