Margot Robbie reveals details about dating and marrying housemate Tom Ackerley.

The 27-year-old talks London housemates, falling in love, and the early days of marriage.

Margot Robbie certainly lives a fun and drama-filled life.

Having started out her career on the big screen in Australian soap opera Neighbours, the 27-year-old actress has gone on to work alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith, launch her own production company, and receive her first Oscar nomination for her lead role in I, Tonya.

You’re not the only one feeling like you haven’t achieved much in life right now, don’t worry.

However, one of the most intense moments of Robbie’s twenties to date was arguably when she had to keep her romance with now-husband Tom Ackerley a secret from her housemates.

During filming for her 2013 film Suite Française, Margot recently told The Guardian how she formed a strong bond with the film’s London-based cast and crew so, when she was visiting the UK for the premiere of Wolf Of Wall Street, the group of friends organised to meet up.

‘We were like: “Wouldn’t it be funny if we all lived together?” Someone said: “But you don’t live in London”, and I said: “I don’t live anywhere. I’ll move.”

Three days later we signed a lease in Clapham. I didn’t even see the place – I had to fly out to the Golden Globes [where Wolf Of Wall Street had been twice nominated] three hours after we made the decision.’

The three-bed house in question was shared between five assistant directors (ADs), Robbie’s friend-turned-assistant, and the Aussie actress.

‘Obviously ADs get paid like sh*t. So we had to, ah…fit quite a few people in to a small place,’ she joked.

A year into her house share, Robbie began shooting The Legend Of Tarzan in London when she struck up a romance with housemate and assistant director, Tom Ackerley, who was working on a Mission: Impossible sequel at the time.

Opening up about the early days of their romance, Robbie admits: ‘We kept it a secret. Because we weren’t really taking it seriously. “Oh, whatever, we’re just mates, we’re just mates.” And then… everyone found out.’

When questioned whether the arrangement made things awkward for her housemates, the Academy Award-nominated star star revealed: ‘It was dramatic.

‘I’m not going into the details, but sh*t hit the fan. Our house turned into The Jerry Springer Show for a moment there. But then the dust settled, and it was all good.

Everyone was, like: “No! This is going to ruin our group!” And then it didn’t. It was fine.’

Fast forward a couple of years and Robbie and Ackerley – who is a co-founder of her production company LuckyChap – married in December 2016 in Byron Bay, Australia.

However, married life for the former housemates suddenly came as quite the shock.

When the pair first married, the Australian star says ‘it was our roommates who told us: “You guys had a wedding. You have to live on your own now.” It honestly hadn’t occurred to us. We were, like: “Hm? What? Just the two of us? That’s gonna be weird.”

‘And the first time we were in a house, the two of us, it was weird. Nice. But we missed having heaps of people around.’
