Tyson Fury could receive interim world title shot if he makes retirement U-turn as WBC announce plan

Tyson Fury could be handed a route back to world title glory if he reverses his decision to retire.

The ‘Gypsy King’ is currently out of action in boxing having announced that he would hang up his gloves after his second consecutive defeat to Oleksandr Usyk.

Despite declaring he is no longer active, a whole host of big fights could still await if he chooses to make a comeback yet again.

Anthony Joshua has called for a huge two-fight deal against Fury, which is widely viewed as the biggest commercial fight in the heavyweight division right now.

But an alternative opportunity could arrive for Fury, who could land a WBC interim title shot against current holder Agit Kabayel.

The governing body’s president Mauricio Sulaiman has revealed they’d be open to sanctioning the bout.

He told Sky Sports: “We will [support an undisputed heavyweight title fight] and we will assess what is happening, what is the best scenario.

“[Kabayel] has the WBC interim championship that [he] can defend.

“There’s other big fights like Joshua, Wilder or even Fury. So many other possible great fights.

“[Joshua,] he’s highly ranked in the WBC, he’s a legendary champion and we will support him of course.

“We are absolutely in support of just making sure that the best fights can happen.

“He [Fury] retired, as you may recall, and the WBC supported him to fight Wilder, the first time and he made a hell of a fight.

“It was a draw and that led on to two great additional matches with Wilder, then to what we have seen in the past three or four years and now it’s a dream coming true what is happening [in boxing].

“I spoke to him. He told me he’s retired and I congratulated him. You go out and you have a beautiful family, you’re a multi-millionaire.

“But boxers have something. It is very difficult to step aside but I’m happy he’s retired.

“If he’s to change his mind and give it a try, I’m sure the medicals will be good, the option is open.”

Fury has not yet indicated he is any way open to returning to the sport.

The ‘Gypsy King’ is currently spending time with his family, and even indicated he was training his wife Paris.

In a surprise announcement, he also revealed he will co-manage England in the Soccer Aid charity football match this summer, alongside Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney.

Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh plans to contact the British icon over a new fight in the coming weeks.

But his promoter Frank Warren insisted that he is content in retirement, and doesn’t intend to contact him.

Fury’s trainer Andy Lee also revealed that the 36-year-old retired after being left ‘done’ with the day-to-day life in the sport.

He said: “I think he’s quite happy now, it has to motivate him to come out of retirement.

“They are both great fighters, but if they were to fight, obviously I’d be backing him and think he’d win.

“Just the odd message we have had here and there, but he sounds very happy.

“And he said ‘Andy I’m not f****d, I couldn’t be f****d with it. He seems very happy, simple as that.”
