Ricky Hatton’s cause of death may be revealed on Thursday when a public inquest into the boxing star’s tragic passing gets underway in Manchester.

The former world champion was found at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester on September 14, less than a month before what would’ve been his 47th birthday. All we know so far is that Hatton’s death was not treated as suspicious but more details may emerge when the inquest is opened this morning.

Senior coroner Alison Mutch will chair the inquest, which is listed to take place at South Manchester Coroners’ Court in Stockport at 9am.

The identity of the deceased will be confirmed, along with the medical cause of death, if it is known. Some circumstances may also be revealed.

However, the senior coroner could decide that a full inquest is needed and adjourn the process until a later date.

In a statement released soon after Hatton’s passing, GMP confirmed: “Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6:45am today where they found the body of a 46-year-old man.

“There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”

The ex-boxer’s manager and close friend, Paul Speak, discussed the moment he found Hatton in his home after arriving to wake the star for a flight to Dubai. Speak insists that “the truth” will come out regarding Hatton’s death as he fully believes the star “didn’t intend” to die.

During an interview with Boxing News, Speak said: “The lights weren’t on, which I thought was strange. I thought he’d overslept, but it’s not unusual. People do oversleep. So, I went inside – I have a key – shouting, ‘Rick, Rick, wake up!

“I heard music coming from upstairs, so I went upstairs… I took a look at him… I had to take some time to process it.

“I was in a state of shock and confusion and loss and many more emotions. Then I called the police and the ambulance. But I firmly believe he didn’t intend to do it. It’s for the coroner to determine, but he had it all to live for.”

Speak added: “He’d arranged to take his daughters to see Oasis next week. He was planning to go to Thailand for the WBC convention and a holiday after his fight.

“He’d just booked a flight to Tenerife for Christmas. I want to get the truth out, otherwise people will just speculate.”
