San Diego pitcher inspires Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, has found inspiration in an unexpected place this season: the San Diego Padres’ pitcher Matt Waldron.

During the Chiefs’ recent minicamp, a video surfaced showing Mahomes experimenting with his pitching mechanics, mimicking a knuckleball. Mahomes later confirmed that he was trying to emulate Waldron’s unique pitch, saying, “I’m trying to learn the knuckleball the Waldron dude from the Padres throws.”

Waldron, the only true knuckleballer currently in Major League Baseball, has thrown nearly all of the knuckleballs in the league this season. A native of Nebraska and a lifelong Chiefs fan, Waldron was thrilled to hear about Mahomes’ interest in his pitching style.

“It’s kind of crazy,” Waldron told MLB.com. “Like I’m living in a different universe.”

This season, Waldron has been a solid performer for the Padres, posting a 4-5 record with a 3.76 ERA in 13 starts. His success on the mound has made him a notable figure, even catching the eye of a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

Mahomes, whose father Pat Mahomes Sr. had an 11-year career in MLB, has a history of drawing inspiration from baseball players. He has previously cited Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter as an influence for his famous sidearm throws.
