Highly rated Mexican super-lightweight Angel Fierro was disqualified on Saturday night for kicking his opponent in the groin.
Fierro (23-4-2) met the unheralded Abraham Cordero (16-6) in a small hall fight at the Auditorio Municipal in Tijuana, Mexico.
Despite opening up as a sizeable underdog, it was Cordero who looked to be getting the better of the early proceedings.
In the third round, with frustration setting in, Fierro trapped his adversary against the ropes and tried to land a right hand after the break.
Attempting to restore order, the referee got between both fighters and barked instructions at them before Fierro lunged at Cordero.
While Fierro’s punch fell short, Cordero landed a left hook in reply as all hell broke loose in the ring.
Fierro launched himself at Cordero and let multiple punches fly before kicking his adversary in the groin.
At this point, security rushed the ring and separated the two boxers.
Fierro was restrained in his corner, while Cordero keeled over in pain.
After lying on his back and receiving medical attention for a few minutes, the away fighter rose to his feet to hear that he had won the fight via disqualification.
Angel Fierro suffers latest setback in frustrating 2025
It was a disastrous end to a fight that was supposed to help Fierro rebuild his career following a frustrating saga with Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz.
Fierro saw his stock rise significantly when he went tooth and nail with the former WBA super-lightweight champion in February.

Cruz got his hand raised via unanimous decision, but the contest was both competitive and entertaining enough to warrant an immediate rematch.
The sequel was booked for the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s comeback fight against Mario Barrios in July.
However, Fierro was forced to withdraw from the fight after being hospitalised due to complications with his weight cut.
Fierro’s trainer, Robert Garcia, had been full of hope for his student in the lead-up to last night’s fight, but in the end, it wasn’t to be.
“We’re going to try to get him back in shape, and it will be like starting all over again with me,” Garcia told The Ring after Fierro vs Cordero was announced.
“We lost out on a great payday, an opportunity against a big name.

“But I pulled him out of the fight because he was doing really bad with his weight cut.
“He wasn’t ready, and his body wasn’t going to respond. It could have gotten worse in the ring.
“I’m always going to take care of my fighters before anything else.
“I want my fighters to go home safely to their families instead of calling them to come visit them at the hospital.
“I will never let that happen. Pulling him out of the fight was the best decision we could make at the time.”
